The front-line leadership, supervisors, foreman are the visible examples for the workers. How serious that health and safety being regarded, committed, is shown by the action of supervisors. The involvement of employee to improve health and safety is started from how the supervisor behave. If the supervisors are active in safety only when there is some accident, or when there is big boss come around, the workers will be the same. The worst to be worried about is that the supervisor himself takes shortcuts to get the job done, ignoring safety rules.
What being said is that the supervisors are the one do all of these things; making sure safety procedures are set up and followed, making sure the tools and equipment are in safe hands, making sure that unsafe situations are rectified, making sure the accident has been investigated and reported, making sure… These things are quite a big and challenging jobs. It’s required by laws. Not only one but so many.
