There are 11 duties of the Workplace safety and health committee required by Thai Labor Laws. The workplace that has more than 50 employees need to have a safety committee to take such duties. The intent of this laws are to ensure that employer and employee are join hand two make their workplace safe. By doing this, many factories where safety is never been on the business priorities will try so hard to not have safety committee. Some places try to not have employee representatives in the safety committee so that nobody in the committee will say any word about safety. The laws do not stop them to do that. However, if you look closely to the function of the workplace safety committee, it is not a place where the employer and employee to fight for a better working environment. It is a place where the employer and employee to discuss what need to be done to make it safe. The employer has legal obligation to do as the standards said. Not to do??? The safety committee need to be informed. Minute of safety committee meeting is a document that subject to be submitted on periodic basis. Employer, in fact, has two choices, making safety committee function positively or trying to disable safety committee. The later one is not a wise decision.
