Floor observation—often called a Gemba Walk—is the final piece of the puzzle. It’s where you step away from your desk to see if your Accountability standards, Directives, and Friction-reduction strategies are actually working in real-time.

The “Observer” Mindset
This is not a “patrol” to catch people doing something wrong. It is a fact-finding mission to see where the system is failing the people.

Putting It All Together: The 3-Step Walk

1. Look for the Gap: Use the I.D.E.A. tool to identify if a current problem is a symptom or a root cause.
2. Ask “Why”: Engage a team member using the 5 Whys. “I noticed this step takes three tries; why do you think that is?”
3. Mentor on the Spot: Don’t just fix it. Use the GROW model to ask, “How would you improve this flow?”
