A professional In-Cab Assessment Checklist focuses on the “Three Pillars”: Safety, Smoothness, and Spatial Awareness. This checklist incorporates Steering Control as a fundamental skill across all road types.
In-Cab Assessment Checklist (2026 Edition)
Scoring Key:
1: Dangerous/Fail | 2: Below Standard | 3: Acceptable/Competent | 4: Proactive/Good | 5: Professional/Excellent
Section 1: General Road Driving
Evaluates basic vehicle handling and interaction with urban/suburban traffic.
Traffic Check: 360° awareness, frequent mirror use, and scanning 15 seconds ahead.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Speed Management: Compliance with limits and adjusting for hazards/weather.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Steering Control: Smooth, progressive input; maintaining “10 & 2” or “9 & 3” hand positions; no “palming” the wheel.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Braking/Acceleration: Progressive pedal use; no “stabs” or “jackrabbit” starts.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Section 2: Turning (Right & Left)
Focuses on geometry, spatial awareness, and mechanical sympathy.
Traffic Check: Clearing the “blind side” and checking for cyclists/pedestrians at the curb.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Steering Control: Accurate “setup” (swinging wide if needed) and smooth “unwinding” of the wheel to prevent trailer/rear-wheel curb strikes.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Positioning: Maintaining the vehicle within the arc of the lane; managing tail swing.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Signal & Speed: Early signaling and dropping to a “walking pace” for tight corners.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Section 3: Lane Changes
Evaluates lateral movement and communication with other drivers.
The “Lifesaver” Check: Physical shoulder check and mirror verification of gap speed.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Steering Control: Gradual lateral movement; avoids “jerking” the wheel or over-correcting during the transition.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Gap Management: Entering a gap without forcing the following vehicle to brake.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Communication: Minimum 3–5 flashes of signal before moving.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Section 4: Highway, Motorway & Expressway
High-speed focus on long-range anticipation and lane discipline.
Horizon Scanning: Looking 30 seconds ahead for traffic waves and brake lights.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Steering Control: High-speed stability; keeping the vehicle centered in the lane; minimal micro-adjustments (indicating fatigue or distraction).
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Space Cushion: Maintaining a 3-second (car) or 4-second (HGV) following distance.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Lane Discipline: Proper use of the slow lane; moving over for merging traffic; returning to lane after overtaking.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Section 5: Parking Lots & Intersections
Evaluates “Close-Quarter” maneuvers and right-of-way.
Traffic Check: Identifying pedestrians between cars and “red-light runners.”
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Steering Control: Precise maneuvering in tight spaces; full lock usage without “shuffling” excessively or hitting the steering stops.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
No Unnecessary Stopping: Efficient merging and yielding; maintaining momentum where safe.
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Final Scoring Summary
Total Score / 100: (Total points ÷ 20 criteria)
1.0 – 2.5: High Risk. Driver requires immediate supervision/retraining.
2.6 – 3.5: Standard. Driver is competent for general duties.
3.6 – 5.0: Elite. Driver is suitable for mentor roles or specialized transport.
Critical Error
Fleet safety standards categorize certain behaviors as Critical Errors (Automatic Fails). These are actions that either result in an immediate safety hazard, violate the law, or require the assessor to intervene physically or verbally to prevent an accident.
Incorporating this section into your checklist ensures that even if a driver scores “5” in other areas, a single life-threatening mistake results in an unsuccessful assessment.
Section 6: Critical Errors (Automatic Fail)
If any of the following occur during the assessment, the driver fails immediately.
