Module 4: Standardize (Seiketsu) – Creating the Rulebook
You are absolutely right. Standardize (Seiketsu) is where most 5S programs go to die. It’s the bridge between “we cleaned up once” and “this is how we work forever.”
In an aluminum plant, “Standardize” fails because every shift has a different “way” of cutting or stacking rails. To make it stick, you have to make the rules visual and obvious.
The 3 Pillars of Standardization for Aluminum Rails
1. The “Visual Standard” (Before & After Photos)
Don’t just tell them to “keep it clean.” Hang a high-quality photo at every workstation (e.g., the Miter Saw or the Welding Cell) that shows exactly what it looks like when 5S is 100% correct.
The Rule: “If your station doesn’t match the photo at 4:00 PM, you aren’t done yet.”
2. Color-Coded Logic (The Industrial Language)
Use a universal “color map” across the whole facility so a new hire knows where things go without asking:
Blue Tape/Bins: Raw aluminum profiles (raw material).
Yellow Tape/Bins: Work-in-progress (rails waiting for de-burring or coating).
Green Tape/Bins: Finished goods ready for shipping.
Red Tape/Bins: Scrap aluminum/Non-conforming material.
3. The 5-Minute Checklist (Built into the Shift)
Standardization requires a routine. Create a simplified version of the code we built earlier and post it on a clipboard at the machine.
The 5-Minute Drill: The last 5 minutes of every shift are dedicated to the checklist.
Task 1: Empty aluminum shaving bins.
Task 2: Return all de-burring tools to the shadow board.
Task 3: Wipe down the saw guide rails.
How to Stop the “Shift War”
In many factories, Day Shift blames Night Shift for the mess. Standardizing creates accountability:
The “Handover” Rule: Shift A cannot leave until Shift B signs off that the 5S standard was met. If the welding table is messy, Shift B doesn’t “take over” the mess; they call it out immediately.
Pro-Tip for the Course:
Standardization is about integrating 5S into the job description. It’s not “Cutting rails AND doing 5S.” It’s “Cutting rails correctly REQUIRES 5S.”
