Module 3: Shine (Seiso) – Clean to Inspect

“Shine” in an aluminum plant is the most misunderstood step. Most workers think it’s just “janitorial work,” but in metal fabrication, Shine = Inspection.

In an aluminum rail facility, microscopic aluminum dust and sharp shards are the enemies of precision and machine life.

1. The “Silver Dust” Hazard: Aluminum fine dust is abrasive. If it gets into the guide rails of a precision miter saw, it acts like sandpaper, destroying the machine’s accuracy over time. 
2. Slippery Floors: Aluminum shavings on a polished concrete floor are like ball bearings. A “Shine” routine prevents slip-and-fall injuries. 
3. Coolant Contamination: Aluminum cutting often uses mist or liquid coolant. If the machines aren’t wiped down, the coolant mixes with dust to create a “sludge” that clogs filters and smells terrible. 

• Leakage: While wiping the base of a hydraulic rail press, are there oil spots? (Catching a leak now saves a $10k pump later). 
• Looseness: While vacuuming the saw housing, is the blade guard vibrating? Is a bolt loose? 
• Damage: While cleaning a finished rail, are there recurring scratches? (This tells you a roller on the conveyor is broken). 

• Step 1: Clear the Deck. Sweep up the big aluminum offcuts and put them in the scrap bin. 
• Step 2: Vacuum the Vitals. Use an industrial vacuum to pull dust out of the saw’s motor and guide rails.
• Step 3: Wipe the Surfaces. Use a rag to clean the measuring scales. If you can’t read the numbers, you’ll cut the rail wrong.
• Step 4: Tag the Trouble. If you see a cracked belt or a fraying wire while cleaning, tag it for maintenance immediately.

Pro-Tip for our course: Give each machine an “Ownership Tag.” If “Mike” is the owner of Saw #1, he is the only one who cleans it. This creates pride of ownership—he won’t want to work on a dirty, inaccurate machine.
