5S in early year. “The Time Line”

The Timeline of 5S Evolution- It was not started in Japan as you think.

16th Century: The Arsenal of Venice
- One of the earliest recorded examples of “5S-like” organization occurred in Venice’s shipyards.
- By streamlining their production and organizing materials, shipbuilders were able to assemble massive ships in hours or days instead of weeks.
Early 20th Century: Henry Ford’s “CANDO”
- Before the term “5S” existed, Henry Ford developed a system called CANDO:
  - Cleaning up, Arranging, Neatness, Discipline, and Ongoing improvement.
- In the 1950s, Toyota representatives visited Ford’s plants, studied these methods, and adapted them to fit the Japanese context.
1950s–1970s: The Birth of 5S at Toyota
- Toyota engineers, including
  Taiichi Ohno
  
  and
  
  Shigeo Shingo
  
  , refined these principles into the Toyota Production System (TPS).
- The goal was to eliminate Muda (waste) and enable “Just-in-Time” manufacturing by ensuring the workplace was clean and visually controlled.
- Originally, some implementations used only 4S, combining “Set in Order” and “Shine” into a single step.
1980s–Present: Global Adoption
- As Japanese manufacturers gained a reputation for world-class quality, Western industries began adopting 5S as a foundation for Lean Manufacturing.
- Authors like
  Takashi Osada
  
  (1991) and
  
  Hiroyuki Hirano
  
  (1995) published the first English-language guides, standardizing the 5S steps we use today.
